In the field of printing, Delft occupied a leading position from the outset. The carpet industry flourished with Francois Spierinx and in the 17th century Delft experienced a new heyday with the manufacture of Delft Blue. Initially, Delft was one of the largest cities in the Netherlands and was home to numerous artists, such as Carel Frabitius, Pieter de Hoogh, Gerand Houckgeest, Emanuel de Witter, Jan Steen and the already mentioned Johannes Vermeer.

Reinier de Graaf and Antonie van Leeuwenhoek put Delft on the international map through their scientific research. This reputation ensured the cultivation of the industry into the present TU-Delft and the renowned research institute TNO. Delft is therefor appropriately granted the title as the “City of Knowledge”, with the slogan 'Creating History'.
